Basic Two and Three Week Clubhouse Training

a) First time Participants (New Clubhouses)

These two and three week training experiences are designed for programs converting to the clubhouse model from another service approach or starting as a new clubhouse. Tuition includes training and lodging for the clubhouse director, one staff person and one member. Additionally, tuition includes training and lodging for an individual with administrative oversight responsibility for the clubhouse for the last week of the program. In most cases a post training site visit to the new clubhouse by members of the training team is provided approximately six months after the training.

b) Ongoing Training (Established Clubhouses)

These two and three week training experiences are equivalent to training for the first time participants but are designed for clubhouses where the clubhouse director has already been to training. Tuition includes training and lodging for one member and one staff person for two or three weeks. Additionally, tuition includes training and lodging for the clubhouse director or an individual administrative oversight responsibility for the clubhouse for the last week of the two or three-week experience. In most cases a post training site visit by members of the training team is provided to the clubhouse approximately six months after the training. At the discretion of the training base one additional person may be added to a two or three-week team or to the second or third week only.

In General

The training enables colleagues to immerse themselves in the clubhouse community. The time will give colleagues a solid background in the basic clubhouse mechanics. How does a work unit run? What is the philosophy of a clubhouse? Staff/member relations. What is transitional employment and how does it work? This will be accomplished through the training curriculum that has been developed by the International Center for Clubhouse Development, over the past ten years.

The curriculum includes participation in Genesis work units, an opportunity to become involved in the transitional employment program, developing a clubhouse housing component, and ample time to discuss clubhouse ideas and issues.

A site-visit to a nearby clubhouse will be included to enable colleagues to see different clubhouse scenarios. We also provide a series of readings that complement the colleagues day to day clubhouse experience. Even more importantly, however, a two or three week long session truly allows colleagues to develop relationships with the staff and members of Genesis Club. These relationships are the heart of any quality clubhouse. They can not be taught, they must be experienced.

ENGAGING YOUNG ADULTS IN THE CLUBHOUSE

This training includes the significant experience of both Genesis Club and Fountain House, sharing how they have successfully increased the number of Clubhouse members who are young adults.  The foundation of clubhouse supports, education and employment, are the key areas in which Young Adults are seeking assistance.  (Providing employment supports, exploring new referral sources, approaching outreach differently).  Tuition includes lodging and a two day working retreat at Highpoint, the farm managed by Fountain House, with Fountain House and Genesis Club members and staff.

LEADERSHIP

Clubhouses do not succeed by chance. Rather, dynamic clubhouse partnerships emerge from a clear vision of both members and staff. Competent leadership is at the core of this process, and plays a vital role in guiding clubhouse growth and enrichment. The Leadership Training Track is designed to foster the professional development of current and aspiring clubhouse administrators.

This training equips clubhouse leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to effectively operate clubhouses. Topics covered include: staff training, supervision and member/staff retention; establishing organizational structure; communication with auspice agencies and funding sources; fundraising; and effective communication with a Board of Directors. Participating clubhouses are invited to collaborate with setting their agenda prior to attending the Leadership Training Track.

Three Day Orientation/Overview Visit

A three-day introduction to the clubhouse model is provided for interested individuals not currently affiliated with an established clubhouse. This orientation is meant to be a brief overview of the clubhouse way of working and not a substitute for clubhouse training. Tuition includes the overview program and lodging for two people (a mental health consumer and a staff person or the other interested party) for two nights and three days.
