Building Dreams, Careers, and Friendships
October 28th, 2010
“Genesis Club is our rock, our anchor. It is a place of stability, understanding, and support. It is important to know it will be here next year, and the year after that.” (Heidi Stolgitis)
Genesis Club hosted its third annual Building Dreams Breakfast at Mechanics Hall on October 28th. The event was extremely successful with over 200 people in attendance. The morning was ushered in by the expressive folk music of Meg Hutchinson who sang so poignantly about living with mental illness.
Patrice Muchowski, Ad-Care Hospital, our former board president, introduced the morning and notable audience members; including senators, representatives, doctors, and interested public. Kevin Bradley outlined the future and importance of Genesis Club's work, followed by a short video, taken from last year’s clubhouse rally at the State House.
Laura Blockel gave her personal testimony about how Genesis Club has made a tremendous difference in her quality of life and improved her recovery journey. Heidi Stolgitis made an impassioned closing speech asking all in attendance to give generously, to help continue the mission of Genesis Club. Patrice did a final thank you and Meg Hutchinson played her song “Seeing Stars” as our guests left Mechanics Hall. In all $54,000 dollars was raised for Genesis Club.
Our thanks goes out to so many for organizing and sponsoring our Breakfast! Our hosting sponsor, UMass Medical School/ Commonwealth Medicine gave $5,000 to Genesis Club to defray the costs of the event. Unum Corporation, Sunshine Sign, O’Connor, Maloney & Company, P.C., and JML Contracting generously donated money, services, and flowers to put the finishing touches on the day. Our long-time partner in employment, Chartwells, provided all the outstanding service and catering for our morning.
Finally, thanks to our table captains, staff and members who made this event possible. Our guests, who came to learn about Genesis, and those who gave so generously to our mission are the very heart of what makes Genesis a true community treasure.

Worcester Energy Barnraisers help Genesis Club reduce Carbon Emissions!
October 24, 2009
Genesis received a day long visit from the Energy Barn Raisers, a volunteer environmental group comprised of students, community folks, contractors, electricians, and carpenters. This group identifies non-profits in Worcester and then they team up to weatherize them (making places more energy efficient, thus saving energy costs and reducing the carbon footprint). A side benefit is that people in Worcester are introduced to non-profits in their city, and their mission. People also learn skills at a barn raising that they can use for their own homes. As the Energy Barn Raisers decided which project to take on next, they were especially impressed with the Genesis Mission of helping individuals with a mental illness attain housing, employment and friendships. Please Click Here For a Great Video of the Day
Several Barn Raisers signed up for tours in the future, came to the Building Dreams Breakfast, and even asked to intern during their Winter Semester!! The organizers and all the volunteers represented were a great part of Worcester: WPI, Worcester State, Holy Cross, QCC and Clark students - even a couple of professors, several families, individuals, and, of course, staff and members at Genesis. Everyone worked together caulking and sealing cracks, insulating windows and outlet plates, installing door sweeps, and many other tasks determined ahead of time to help make the Clubhouse more energy efficient.

All 22 Team Genesis runners started and finished the grueling 7 mile Falmouth Road Race, along with 10,000 other runners. Genesis members Ed Sanborn, John Gasperski and Kitty Berthiaume should be congratulated for their effort in completing the race. Mike Decoste lead the team placing 91st with a time of 40:47. Katie Carlson, our youngest runner, placed 74th among the females, and Chelsea Graves placed 152nd. However, the most important statistic is that Team Genesis raised over $15,000 and increased awareness to support the Genesis Wellness Program.
