Wellness Programs

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THOSE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS HAVE A 25 YEAR EARLIER MORTALITY RATE AND A HIGHER RATE OF OBESITY, DIABETES, HEART AND LUNG DISEASE. IN RESPONSE TO THESE SOBERING STATISTICS, THE GENESIS CLUB HAS EXTENSIVE WELLNESS OPPORTUNITIES.
Structured Exercise
The Genesis Club manages a Structured Exercise Program in partnership with the Greendale YMCA. Structured Exercise is a transitional exercise program that allows members to participate in exercise with the support of a group. The program intends to be a step towards encouraging members in independent exercise.  On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, a group of members and staff go to the Greendale YMCA together to work out, swim, and take classes. The Structured Exercise Program YMCA Membership is a full gym membership that members can also use on their own time. Genesis Club provides transportation three times a week when the group goes, and membership is subsidized. To join the Structured Exercise Program, a person must be a current Genesis Club Member, and pay a small fee.

Road Races
The Genesis Club has developed a racing group called “Team Genesis”. Team Genesis participates in several road races in the Worcester area such as the Worcester Memorial Fire Fighter’s 6k, Canal Digger’s Race, Celtic 5k, the Falmouth Road Race, and many others. Team Genesis also encourages walkers to participate in non-racing events such as the NAMI Walk for the Homeless, and 1K Walks within larger road races.

Pedometer Program
The Genesis Club offers pedometers for rent for four months at a time. Club members pay a small fee to rent a pedometer and record their walking mileage. The Club then compiles the mileage data and celebrates it by charting it on our Pedometer Board and Map.

Noon-Thirty Wellness Walk
At 12:30 pm every day, the Genesis Club offers a structured “walk around the block” where members and staff gather for a brisk walk in the neighborhood. Each day the trail is different and many people participate. The walks are coordinated by staff and member partners who choose which one of the trails to walk.

Salad Bar
Every day at lunchtime, the Genesis Club kitchen provides a fresh and healthy salad bar that is available to members and staff for $1.50. The salad bar is a nutritious option for daily lunch or an alternative to the main meal being served at Genesis Club that day. Members can also purchase a small side salad for 50 cents.

Weekly Dual Recovery Meeting (D R A)
Genesis Club facilitates a Dual Recovery Anonymous meeting for individuals with a mental illness who are also in recovery from chemical dependency. This meeting is also for friends or family of persons experiencing dual illnesses. The goal is to help men and women who experience a dual illness achieve dual recovery, prevent relapse, and to carry the message of recovery to others who experience dual disorders. On Thursdays at 6:30, Genesis Club sponsors a DRA meeting at Ad Care hospital open to Clubhouse members and to the general public.
