Young Adult Program

Picture
Young Adults are an integral part of Genesis Club.  They are present in every unit and take part in all work of the Clubhouse.  They receive the same supports as all clubhouse members, from education and employment to outreach and peer support.  Genesis Club defines our young adult members as those 18 to 25 years of age.

Genesis Club, working with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, has developed the Transitional Age Peer Support initiative, also known as TAPS, which engages young adults ages 18 to 25 years of age who are transitioning into adult services and handling adult responsibilities.

TAPS, a component of the clubhouse model, provides employment, education and housing supports and social connections for people with mental illness.  TAPS seeks to work with identified Young Adults several times a week for a 90-120 day period to identify and discuss goals and attempt to match them with adult services that support their goals.

The TAPS team of staff and Young Adult members meets weekly on Tuesday at 11:00 AM to discuss the work of supporting Young Adults in the clubhouse and in the community.  Young Adults from all units are welcome to join.

The work of TAPS is to help Young Adults:
  • Obtain meaningful employment
  • Acquire an income, develop a budget and manage benefits
  • Start the path to earning a degree or certificate in the school of their choice
  • Move from child system clinical services to adult care providers
  • Obtain and utilize independent transportation, like community bus routes and driver's licenses
  • Search and apply for supported or independent housing and subsidies
  • Access and become comfortable using current technology
